When is this webinar scheduled?

This webinar will take place from 3pm to 6pm (Singapore time) on Wednesday, 27 July 2022. Specifically, Session A on the HCCH 2005 Choice of Court Convention runs from 3pm to 4:15pm (SGT), and Session B on the HCCH 2019 Judgments Convention runs from 4:45pm to 6pm (SGT).

Who will be speaking at this webinar (in alphabetical order)?

Sara Chisholm-Batten (London, United Kingdom)

Partner, Michelmores LLP 

Sara is a commercial litigator and tactician. The clients Sara advises include multi-national corporations, small to medium-sized businesses and entrepreneurs, development finance institutions and professional fiduciaries. Sara is a specialist in cross-border enforcement measures and has a wealth of first-hand international experience in this area (including in Emerging Markets). Her current caseload includes disputes where parties and assets are based offshore, in Europe, Africa, Asia, India, Russia, North and South America, New Zealand and other parts of the world. Sara is a Ranked Individual in Chambers and Partners 2022 for Litigation, is a "Future Leader: Litigation" in Who's Who Legal 2022 and is ranked as a Leading Individual for fraud cases in Legal 500. Sara is also an officer on the International Bar Association's litigation committee and was an observer for the IBA at the Hague Conference on Private International Law (HCCH) Judgments Project from 2017 to 2019.

The Honourable Justice David Goddard (Wellington, New Zealand)

Court of Appeal of New Zealand

Justice Goddard studied mathematics and French at Victoria University of Wellington, then studied law at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. He taught law at Bristol University before returning to New Zealand to practise law. He was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 2003. Before his appointment to the bench, Justice Goddard had a wide-ranging practice with a particular focus on appellate litigation. He also had an extensive involvement in law reform in New Zealand and overseas, advising ministers and government agencies and representing New Zealand in bilateral and multilateral negotiations. He was a Vice-President of the Diplomatic Session of the Hague Conference on Private International Law that adopted the Hague Convention on Choice of Court Agreements in 2003, and a member of the drafting committee for that Treaty. He was the Chair of the Diplomatic Session that adopted the Hague Convention on Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Judgments in Civil and Commercial Matters in July 2019.

Justice Goddard spent the 2018-19 academic year at the New York University Law School as a Senior Global Fellow from Practice and Government, writing a book about the ways in which legislation fails to achieve its objectives and how we can improve the legal design process. He was appointed a Judge of the New Zealand High Court and Court of Appeal in July 2019.

Justice Goddard will only speak at Session B.

Justice Anselmo Reyes (joining from Hong Kong SAR, China)

Singapore International Commercial Court

Anselmo Reyes practises as an arbitrator. He was Professor of Legal Practice at Hong Kong University from October 2012 to September 2018. Before that, he was a judge of the Hong Kong High Court from 2003 to 2012 when he was in charge of the Construction and Arbitration List (2004 to 2008) and the Commercial and Admiralty Lists (2008 to 2012). He was Representative of the Hague Conference on Private International Law's Regional Office Asia Pacific from April 2013 to July 2017.

Anselmo became an International Judge of the Singapore International Commercial Court in January 2015. He is currently a visiting professor at the law faculty of Doshisha University in Kyoto, Japan.

Kabir Singh (Singapore)

Partner, Clifford Chance

Kabir is a Partner in the International Arbitration and Dispute Resolution practice at Clifford Chance in Singapore. He specialises in complex, cross border disputes with a focus on India, Indonesia, and South East Asia. His impressive client roster includes large multinational corporations, international banks and financial institutions with presence across APAC. He has almost 20 years’ experience as an international arbitration lawyer.

Kabir is valued for his excellent knowledge of the law and arbitral procedure, as well as providing deep strategic insight on the most complex cases. He has acted as counsel on numerous international arbitrations under the rules of SIAC, ICC, LCIA, HKIAC and AAA, and has developed an active practice as arbitrator. Significantly, has attained the title of a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, which is an international standard of training acquired by professional arbitrators across the world.

Kabir has been appointed as an alternate member of the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce (the "ICC Court"), for a three-year term. He has also been involved in various teaching initiatives including with the ICC, SIAC, NUS Centre for International Law, Foundation for International Arbitration Advocacy (FIAA) and Chulalongkorn University (Thailand).

Kabir is a market leader who is consistently recognised by leading legal directories such as Chambers & Partners, Legal 500 and Who's who Legal for his expertise in international arbitration. Most recently, he was named as a Leading Individual for International Arbitration – Singapore by The Legal 500 2022 and ranked by the India Business Law Journal as one of the world’s top 100 international lawyers for India-related matters – a member of the “A-List” of India specialists around the world.

Dr Ning Zhao (joining from The Hague, Netherlands)

Senior Legal Officer, Permanent Bureau of the Hague Conference on Private International Law

Ning Zhao is Senior Legal Officer at the Permanent Bureau of the HCCH where she works in the Transnational Litigation Division, looking after the HCCH 2005 Choice of Court Convention, the HCCH 2019 Judgments Convention, and the HCCH 2015 Principles on Choice of Law in International Commercial Contracts, on a day-to-day basis. She has been intensively involved in the preparation of the negotiation of the HCCH 2019 Judgments Convention leading to its final adoption on 2 July 2019.

Prior to joining the Permanent Bureau, she worked in private practice and taught private international law at various universities. Ms Zhao holds LL.M. degrees in International Economic and Business Law (cum laude) from the University of Groningen (the Netherlands) and in European Law from Radboud University Nijmegen (the Netherlands), as well as a doctoral degree in private international law from the University of Groningen. She has been a visiting scholar at different academic institutes and published articles in the field of private international law. She is a member of the Standing Directors of the China Society of Private International Law.

This webinar has been accredited for 2 public CPD points, and 1 public CPD point for each session. Attendees who wish to claim CPD points are reminded to provide their AAS numbers or other number issued by the Singapore Institute of Legal Education (SILE) during registration. I am a practitioner qualified in a jurisdiction other than Singapore. Will attending this webinar entitle me to claim relevant CPD-equivalent points in my own jurisdiction?

The answer to this question depends on the rules of the relevant governing body in your jurisdiction. In the past, we have issued letters of attendance accompanied by actual Zoom log-in records to assist non-Singapore-qualified attendees to claim their professional learning points. Therefore, if a letter of attendance and a Zoom record are all you need, we will be able to help. Likewise, we have issued the same set of documents to professionals other than lawyers who may also have such continuing education requirements.

However, if the rules of your jurisdiction require an event to be accredited, we regret that this session will not entitle you to claim points outside of Singapore.

What if I am unable to attend this webinar after registration? Are the fees paid refundable?

Unfortunately, the payments made are not refundable. If you are unable to attend the webinar, we request that you let us know as soon as possible so that we can let you transfer your slot to your colleague.

Yes, a recording of the webinar can be made available upon request via a private link, though it is important to bear in mind that viewing the recording will not entitle you to any public CPD points. In principle, we only provide recording upon request by a paid attendee.
