Post-Pandemic Blues: Survive? Or Thrive? - The Future of The PIPD Profession
Date & Time: 12 February 2025 2pm - 6pm
Venue: State Courts, Havelock Hall, Basement 2, 1 Havelock Square, Singapore 059724
The pandemic now seems like a distant memory. But in truth, many of us forget that it really only ended in March 2023 with the WHO declaration. More importantly, the effects of the pandemic remain with us in the PIPD world up to today – asynchronous and hybrid work, paperless offices, judicial ADR now taking the form of pure neutral evaluation, less of an opportunity to see one another, more paper advocacy than court craft.
Were these changes an inevitability, even without the pandemic? Likely so, given that “Courts of the Future” was conceived well before the global crisis.
Has the post-pandemic era brought a “new normal” which is only a little different from the time before any of us heard of the word “coronavirus”? Or will the changes from the pandemic bring more changes? Now that the ratchet has turned, it doesn’t seem to want to turn back. And will it turn even further?
Will Artificial Intelligence change the PIPD landscape forever, whether through the work processes we undertake, or the very subject matter of our work?
In this symposium, lawyers from within and without the PIPD profession speak about learning from the pandemic and using these lessons to meet the challenges and shape a positive future for PIPD lawyers and clients.

He will also share his personal experiences in dealing with high value mediation cases in the PIPD space: how important the case was to the family and their search for a solution for lives deeply affected by a death or serious injury though the litigation process |
Mr George Lim SC Chairman, Singapore International Mediation Centre |
2.20pm - 2.45pm | Mediation, Neutral Evaluation and Advocacy Associate Professor Dorcas Quek Anderson will touch on the role of counsel and how they can contribute to a fair mediation outcome which is decided by the parties rather than one which depends on a trial process with an uncertain outcome. She will also discuss whether the concepts of neutral evaluation and mediation are mutually exclusive or whether they can be merged. Dorcas speaks with the experience of having mediated many PIPD matters. |
Associate Professor Dorcas Quek Anderson Associate Professor of Law, SMU Yong Pung How School of Law |
2.45pm - 3.10pm | ADR and Sustainability Issues Mr K Anparasan will speak on law firm sustainability issues and how non-judicial mediation and neutral evaluation can help PIPD lawyers do even better in their ability to help their clients and businesses, even for State Court matters. |
Mr K Anpasaran Director, WhiteFern LLC |
3.10pm - 4.25pm | Autonomous vehicles Mr Anthony Wee will bring us into the future which some say is already here. He will speak about driverless vehicles, both their promise and the issues that they bring. What kind of AVs will be introduced into Singapore? What are the ethical issues that arise? What legislative changes may be necessary? Will they affect PIPD practice in the near, medium or far future? |
Mr Anthony Wee Managing Director, Titanium Law Chambers LLC |
4.25pm - 4.45pm | Tea break | |
4.45pm - 6pm | Young Lawyers’ Panel Ms Renuka Chettiar will moderate a panel of younger lawyers who will form the vanguard of the next generation of PIPD firm owners. Some of them only started practice during the pandemic. Others already own their own businesses. These lawyers will speak to the issues that concern them the most about the future of the PIPD profession. Indeed, they are our future. The pandemic has perhaps taught them better than senior lawyers who are used to running their practice in a certain way. Their views are progressive and hopeful, but never naïve. Everyone should consider their determination to continue making PIPD a viable and profitable option, so that our profession can continue looking after this sector which is hugely important from a societal perspective. And perhaps help them accelerate change in our profession right now. |
