Tort Law
The SAL Annual Review of 2024 Cases on Tort Law will feature presentations by authors Professor Kumaralingam Amirthalingam, Professor at the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore, and Professor Gary Chan Kok Yew, Vice Provost (Faculty Matters) & Professor of Law at the Yong Pung How School of Law, Singapore Management University.
The session will focus on significant developments in tort law from 2024, offering insights into key cases that have shaped the legal landscape. The presentation will explore the evolving principles in tort law, highlighting judicial trends and their implications for both legal practice and societal interests. Notable cases to be discussed include: CIX v DGN [2024] SGHC 133, Crapper Ian v Salmizan [2024] SGCA 21, Golden Pacific Shipping and Arc Marine Engineering [2024] SGHC 15, Mah Kiat Seng v AG [2023] SGHC 14, Kapital Fund SPC v Lee Tze Wee Andrew [2024] SGHC 289, Dways International Pte Ltd (formerly known as D’way International Pte Ltd and as Longevite Pte Ltd) v Lim Seow Hui Ratna Irene [2024] SGHC 124.

Professor Kumaralingam Amirthalingam Kumaralingam Amirthalingam obtained his LLB (Hons) and PhD in law from the Australian National University where he commenced his academic career. He joined the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore in 2000 and over the years has served as Vice Dean (Academic Affairs), Vice Dean (International Programmes) and Director, Asian Law Institute. At the University level, he has served on various committees and was Chair of the NUS Teaching Academy from 2015 to 2018. He spent two years on secondment to the Attorney-General’s Chambers, Singapore as a Deputy Public Prosecutor and Senior Director (Research & Policy), appearing before the State Court and the High Court. He has twice appeared before the Court of Appeal as an Amicus Curiae. He has advised the Ministry of Law and Ministry of Health, and is a member of the Singapore Medical Council’s Complaints Panel. His research is primarily in the areas of criminal law and justice (focusing on the role of the Public Prosecutor) and tort law (focusing on medical liability and economic loss).

Professor Gary Chan Kok Yew Gary Chan is Professor of Law, Yong Pung How School of Law, Singapore Management University. Prior to joining academia in 2002, he had served as a judicial officer in the Supreme Court of Singapore and worked as a corporate lawyer and legal counsel. His main research interests are Tort Law, the Singapore Legal System, Health Law and Ethics. Gary Chan has authored and/or edited books as well as numerous book chapters, journal articles and case notes on the abovementioned research. His publications have been cited by the Singapore Court of Appeal, High Court and State Courts. |
