Community Law in Focus is a series of events seminars that offer audiences an insightful exploration of key areas in community law. The series opens with Academy Publishing’s newest publication, Marriage, Spouses and Assets by Professor Leong Wai Kum (SUSS).

Join us for an insightful seminar where the author of the book will share insights and suggestions as well as provide a comprehensive overview of the theory, substantive principles, key judicial decisions, and procedural rules as applied by the Family Justice Courts.

This will be followed by a panel discussion examining how Singapore’s family law addresses the rights and responsibilities of individuals within a marital relationship.

Participants will gain insights into how the law governs the distribution of assets, the protection of spousal interests, and the resolution of disputes. The seminar also highlights how the law aims to support the goal of nurturing loving and durable familial relationships.

Professor Leong Wai Kum
Professor, Law Programmes, School of Law
Singapore University of Social Sciences

Leong Wai Kum graduated with Bachelor of Laws (Class 1) from University of Malaya Kuala Lumpur in 1976. She entered on a University Entrance Scholarship in 1972, won Senior Scholarships in 1973, 1974 and 1975, the Moot Court Prize in 1973, several University Subject Prizes and graduated as top student as the first Lord President’s Scholar. She joined the Faculty of Law University of Singapore in 1976 and proceeded to read her Master of Laws at Harvard University in 1979.

As teacher she contemplated upon the theory and conceptual bases of family law and worked on rationally relating its components. She contributed private representations to the Select Committees of Parliament on the Women’s Charter (Amendment) Bills No. 23 of 1979 and No. 5 of 1996. Today she proudly points to areas of family life that she believes are better regulated in Singapore than most common law jurisdictions. At the School of Law Singapore University of Social Sciences she brings her experience to offer an integrated course so students appreciate that theory, substance and procedure do work hand-in-glove.
