Important Note: This module is offered only to participants who register for the JLP Opening Conference scheduled on 21 May 2025. The module is divided into two sessions for the convenience of the participants.

This module aims to help young lawyers uncover their self-leadership and confidence to support a more effective, sustainable and enjoyable career in the legal profession. The two sessions in this module expand in a practical way focusing on the personal wellbeing section of the Lawyers’ Sustainability Report 2023 published by Mindful Business Singapore.

Both sessions will be interactive, and each will include a practical exercise to help participants learn how to apply the principles of the module.

The sessions will be facilitated by Rachel Wright, lawyer, certified Health and Wellness Coach and Susan de Silva, former lawyer, certified Neuro Transformational Coach.

Session 1: Introduction to Lawyer Sustainability and Personal Wellbeing (Where am I?)

This session will introduce Mindful Business Singapore’s Lawyers’ Sustainability Report with the main focus being on its section on personal wellbeing for lawyers, to build Participants’ awareness of our human needs for thriving and developing greater awareness of their personal capacity to sustain their wellbeing and effectiveness.

Participants will have the opportunity to undertake their own personal wellbeing assessment to help them identify their level of satisfaction with the different areas of their life, and the areas where they would like to focus on strengthening.

[Sesson 1 duration: 1.5 hours]

Session 2: Working Effectively (What can I do?)

This session will focus on tools to help Participants manage their time when working in a time-pressured environment when they do not have much autonomy over their workload or hours, how to prepare for new roles, and working effectively from home.

It will also include a discussion on the 4 pillars of the Mindful Business Charter, and how the Participants can use these pillars in their interactions in the workplace to support a more enjoyable, effective and sustainable career in the legal profession.

Working Effectively - What can I do?

Rachel Wright

I am an in-house lawyer in Singapore, and have lived and worked in Singapore for the last 20 years. I started my career in private practice, working first for a UK law firm in London, and then for a US law firm in London and Singapore. A few years ago, I trained as a Health and Wellness Coach, and seek to bring my learnings from this training into my everyday life both at work and at home.

In my free time I volunteer for Mindful Business Singapore, a group of Singapore lawyers who are focused on making work better and removing unnecessary stress in the legal community.

My coaching qualifications and membership:

  • ADAPT Certified Functional Health Coach
  • US National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach
  • Affiliate Member, UK & International Health Coaching Association
  • Member, Society of Behavioural Health Singapore

Susan de Silva - The Silva Coach

I am a Life and Executive coach and trainer. Using a neuroscience-informed approach, I coach people who want more clarity on their self-leadership resources for more effectiveness, balance and fulfilment in their lives and work. I also deliver training on personal sustainability and effectiveness through better understanding and leveraging the way our thoughts, feelings and actions tie back to our brain.

Before I became a coach, I was a lawyer. I was one of the founding partners of my former law firm and was in legal practice for more than 30 years in Singapore and England. As a cofounder, head of practice and Managing Partner for some years at my former law firm, I had to learn about organisational and personal effectiveness, and I continue to learn about effectiveness from the neuroscience perspective in my work as coach and trainer.

My coaching and training qualifications:

  • Certified Professional Co-Active Coach with Co-Active Training Institute.
  • Certified NeuroTransformational Coach with BEabove Leadership LLC.
  • Licensed trainer of BEabove Leadership’s Neuroscience and Effectiveness curriculum.
  • Member, International Coaches Federation.
