What Makes a Good Advocate - One Judge’s Perspective

Justice Lee Seiu Kin has served almost 23 years in the Supreme Court, first as Judicial Commissioner, then as Judge. In this fireside chat, he will give his take on what makes a good advocate in court from the viewpoint of the target of that advocacy - the judge. Justice Lee will present a personal perspective based his observations of innumerable counsel who have appeared before him in trials, appeals and interlocutory matters. Participants will have the opportunity to engage him on the subject during the Q&A session at the end of his presentation.

The Honourable Justice Lee Seiu Kin

Justice Lee Seiu Kin retired as Judge of the Supreme Court and was appointed Senior Judge on 31 January 2024, after a legal career spanning 36 years. During this period, he was a DPP, Senior State Counsel in the Attorney-General’s Chambers before his appointment as Judicial Commissioner and later, after a stint as Solicitor-General, Judge of the Supreme Court. His earlier career was in engineering, having worked as a Civil Engineer with the Public Works Department before reading law.

He is presently a Resident in The Arbitration Chambers and practises in the ADR space, principally as an arbitrator and mediator. With his background, he is particularly interested in disputes involving engineering, scientific and IT issues.

In his 23 years on the Bench, Justice Lee dealt with the entire gamut of commercial cases filed in the High Court with a focus on building & construction, intellectual property, and information technology cases.

In 2017, he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal (Pingat Jasa Gemilang) by President Halimah Yacob for his role in the technological transformation of the courts and legal sector, and his services in the Legal Service Commission. In 2022, the Singapore Computer Society conferred on him the Digital Achievers Award in recognition of his contributions to the development of IT in the legal sector.
