Drawing on 37 years as a barrister and 9 years as a High Court Judge, the Honourable Mr Justice Michael Soole will focus on the task of a young junior in a case team headed by senior practitioner(s). How to contribute 'value-added' to the overall teamwork; to develop and make best use of specialist skill and knowledge; to anticipate and prepare for tasks which may arise at short notice; to respond to such tasks effectively and speedily; when to speak up and when to keep silent; how to watch, listen and learn - and so in turn to become a senior advocate and practitioner.

Justice Soole will be joined by panellists comprising young lawyers practising in varying set-ups, such as a conventional large firm, a boutique litigation practice and a Singapore-style barrister chambers set-up to provide a range of perspectives of young advocates in today’s profession.

In this talk, Dr Andrew Godwin (Associate Professor of Melbourne Law School) will share his stories of 15 years in private practice (including ten years as a foreign lawyer with an international firm in Shanghai), 15 years in academia and 3.5 years in law reform work, and discuss with the audience on topics such as how today’s lawyers can best maximise career opportunities in a wide range of roles.
