This is the first dedicated text on legal professional privilege in Singapore, containing an exhaustive and structured discussion of all aspects of legal professional privilege. Both the doctrine of legal advice privilege and litigation privilege are critically evaluated, and close attention is paid to how they have been approached under the Evidence Act 1893 and other written laws, as well as at common law, and the differences between each regime. The book discusses all of the leading decisions in Singapore on the topic of legal professional privilege, but also draws on important cases from England, Australia, Hong Kong and other common law jurisdictions. In addition, reference is made to relevant secondary literature and policy issues, and suggestions are offered for legislative reform. This second edition is revised and updated to reflect the 2020 Revised Edition of Acts, the new Rules of Court 2021 and the Singapore International Commercial Court Rules 2021, as well as a number of important local and international judgments handed down since the publication of the first edition.

Author's Bio

Colin Liew graduated with first class honours from St Peter’s College, Oxford University, where he was awarded the Martin Wronker prize as the top undergraduate student of his year, in addition to a number of other academic prizes. He served as a Justices’ Law Clerk to the judges of the High Court and Court of Appeal of Singapore, and was called to the Singapore Bar in 2012, before being admitted as a solicitor of the Senior Courts of England and Wales in 2015. He is in independent practice as a member of Duxton Hill Chambers (Singapore Group Practice), and has acted in or advised on a wide array of commercial disputes before the Singapore courts, and in arbitration under various institutional rules.
