  1. Employment Law in Singapore - Cases and Materials (Print + Digital)

Employment has been an area of especial focus in Singapore even before her independence, given its extensive impact on the general population. Various employment legislation enacted since the founding of Singapore sought to deal with pertinent issues of the time, be it the influx of immigrants in the 19th century, the industrial unrests in the 1950s, or the economic restructuring in the 1980s. Employment Law in Singapore – Cases and Materials consolidates and traces the development of the various legislation which regulate employment practices in Singapore (including the Employment Act, the Employment of Foreign Manpower Act, the Employment Agencies Act, the Work Injury Compensation Act, the Workplace Safety and Health Act and the Foreign Employee Dormitories Act 2015) which as a whole seeks to strike a delicate balance between the competing needs of the various stakeholders such as workers, employers, employment agencies, insurers, and the general public. Cases featured in this book include not only those pertaining to employment offences, but also administrative infringements and work injury compensation. It will serve as a useful handbook to practitioners and persons interested in the regulatory aspect of employment law in Singapore.

  2. International Issues in Family Law In Singapore (Print + Digital)

The “globalisation” of families has raised complex legal issues affecting family life, marriage and divorce. Yet there are relatively few local decisions in Singapore on the private international law aspects of family law. This book discusses conflict of laws rules applicable in family cases in Singapore and relevant local cases that offer guidance on the issues addressed. It also examines substantive law on family issues that have international features. Not quite a book on the conflict of laws nor the traditional topics in family law, its chapters uniquely select family law issues that have international dimensions. It includes discourse on substantive law and the conflicts rules in the formation of marriages, regulation of the marital relationship, matrimonial proceedings terminating marriages in globalised families, the ensuing financial consequences, and the laws on parental abduction and relocation of children across jurisdictions.

  4. Sentencing Frameworks – Quick Reference Guide and Roadmap

     SENTENCING FRAMEWORKS IN SINGAPORE

    Quick Reference Guide and Roadmap

The formulation of sentencing frameworks is an area of active judicial development and innovation in Singapore. In the past decade, these frameworks have appeared in more than 50 sentencing guideline judgments issued by the Singapore Court of Appeal and High Court. Many of the concepts employed in these sentencing frameworks – such as offence-specific sentencing factors, offender-specific sentencing factors, principal factual elements, multiple starting points sentencing approach, sentencing matrix and sentencing bands – have not been considered in other jurisdictions.

Sentencing Frameworks is the first publication to analyse the substantial body of Singapore jurisprudence on sentencing frameworks. It offers the author’s perspectives on some of the considerations that can go into the formulation of sentencing frameworks. Sentencing Frameworks attempts to answer questions such as what are the different types of sentencing frameworks in Singapore, when would a sentencing framework be helpful, how can the offence-specific sentencing factors and principal factual elements for an offence be identified, what are the situations where a sentencing bands framework may be suitable, and how can the starting point sentences for a framework be derived.

Sentencing Frameworks is suitable for criminal law practitioners and anyone who is curious about how sentencing frameworks can be formulated and how sentences can be derived.

    From the Foreword

“This book is a timely response to the many developments in this fast-developing area of the law. Its contents offer useful insights not only as to how existing sentencing frameworks may be applied, but also as to where and how new frameworks might be meaningfully developed.”
