This one-day course is designed for legal professionals seeking to sharpen their understanding of law firm strategy and business positioning. Participants will explore the importance of mission, purpose, vision, and values in shaping a firm’s identity, examine the competitive forces driving the market, and learn how to craft strategies that strengthen their firm’s market standing. By the end of the session, participants will gain a practical, big-picture view of law firm strategy and develop the skills to analyse and articulate their firm’s unique value proposition. This interactive course blends theoretical insights with practical tools, enabling legal professionals to make more informed strategic decisions in their roles.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to: - Clearly define and differentiate mission, purpose, vision, and values, and assess their importance in shaping a law firm’s culture and aspirations. - Analyse the competitive forces and external drivers impacting the industry. - Evaluate their firm’s current strategy and map competitors’ positioning for comparison. - Explore their ability to make more substantive contributions to firm strategy.

Patrick T. Gibbons
Patrick is the Jefferson Smurfit Professor of Strategic Management and until recently headed up the Executive Development programmes at the UCD College of Business. He graduated with a Ph.D. in Strategic Planning and Policy from the University of Pittsburgh. Prior educational qualifications at bachelor’s and master’s levels were gained at UCD.
He has presented academic papers at over 80 international conferences, has published two books and his articles have been published in leading academic journals.
Before entering academia, Patrick worked in a number of financial and corporate strategy roles with KPMG; the Jefferson Smurfit Group; An Post (The Irish Postal Service) and The Investment Bank of Ireland.
Patrick is a Visiting Professor at Nanyang Business School (Singapore), the School for Executive Education and Development (SEED) in Budapest and at the State University of New York-Albany. He previously held visiting positions at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), the European School for Management of Technology (ESMT-Berlin) and Peking University.
Between 2008 and 2013 he was a member of both the UCD Governing Authority and its principal sub-Committee, the Finance, Remuneration and Asset Management Committee (FRAMC). He was also the Vice-President of the University, Staff and Administration between 2004-2006, overseeing a period of significant structural change at the institution. He also served as Associate Dean-Academic of UCD Business School between 2007 and 2011.
