Session 1: Purpose, Values and Strengths (Who am I?)
The philosopher Sam Keen wrote that “Stress… is a product, not of an excess of fire but of a deficiency of passion.”
For more personal and professional effectiveness which is sustainable, our brain needs to be able to connect with both the “tree” (the legal work we do) and the broader context of the “forest” (why that work is meaningful to us). Knowing our personal strengths, values and purpose is a core aspect of the broader context that contributes to our self-awareness about the essence of who we are as unique individuals and what motivates and energises us in our work and lives.
In this session, Participants will learn about their individual strengths, values and purpose as a lawyer, the relevance of these personal qualities in their legal work (and lives) and how using these can promote self-leadership and support a more fulfilling, sustainable career in the legal profession. |

Session 2: Stress and How Emotions Are Made (How do I feel?)
Participants will learn about the optimal and sub-optimal impacts of stimulation, under-stimulation and stress on the way we think, feel and act, and how to better regulate ourselves towards the “just right” place for greater sustainability and effectiveness.
Participants will also learn the powerful process by which our brain constructs our emotions, and how we have more personal agency to choose our emotions than we might think, so that we can have more of the energy and effectiveness we want for ourselves and in our relationships with others, including colleagues and clients through a practical exercise for shifting their emotions which they can use beyond the session. |

I am an in-house lawyer in Singapore, and have lived and worked in Singapore for the last 20 years. I started my career in private practice, working first for a UK law firm in London, and then for a US law firm in London and Singapore. A few years ago, I trained as a Health and Wellness Coach, and seek to bring my learnings from this training into my everyday life both at work and at home.
In my free time I volunteer for Mindful Business Singapore, a group of Singapore lawyers who are focused on making work better and removing unnecessary stress in the legal community.

Susan de Silva - The Silva Coach (www.thesilvacoach.com)
I am a Life and Executive coach and trainer. Using a neuroscience-informed approach, I coach people who want more clarity on their self-leadership resources for more effectiveness, balance and fulfilment in their lives and work. I also deliver training on personal sustainability and effectiveness through better understanding and leveraging the way our thoughts, feelings and actions tie back to our brain.
Before I became a coach, I was a lawyer. I was one of the founding partners of my former law firm and was in legal practice for more than 30 years in Singapore and England. As a cofounder, head of practice and Managing Partner for some years at my former law firm, I had to learn about organisational and personal effectiveness, and I continue to learn about effectiveness from the neuroscience perspective in my work as coach and trainer.
